Summer 1979 until summer 1986 THE GOLDEN MILE of the Costa del Sol was between MARBELLA and PUERTO BANUS MARINA, Bumper to bumper of Rolls-Royces, Mercedeses, BMWs and sport cars paraded the coastal road. The crème-de-la-crème of Europe, South America and the Middle-East partied. Truly "the many tongues of Babylon": a mini cosmopolitan UN.

Countess GUNILLA von Bismarck, descendant of Otto von Bismarck, Germany, made REGINE's nightclub (disco) at Hotel Puente Romano a MAGNET for the rich: young and old. CASINO Marbella was 'the place for a pick-up': the dating game. Puerto Banus and prostitution: on a motor yacht belonging to an Italian Bon-Vivant a 30-year-old Iranian revolution refugee woman (I knew her well) trained girls as escorts for the lavish parties held at the Italian man's villa.

Prince ALFONSO von Hohenlohe owned the Marbella Club Hotel. Venice 1955: he had married Ira von Furstenberg (age 15); her mother was Clara Agnelli of FIAT fame.

Count (Rudolf) RUDI von Schonburg was director of the Marbella Club. He was married to Princess Marie Louise of Prussia, descended from Kaiser/King Wilhelm I; she is second cousin of Spanish Queen Sophia. We saw each other at hair-salon Jean-Claude. One day, as J-C was finishing my hairdo, a man approached him. J-C excused himself and left. When he returned he told me that the man was a private detective employed by a German lady to follow her husband; she suspected he had an affair. The following week, very intrigued and curious, I asked him if there was more to the detective story. He nodded, and said that the husband, escorted by a Spanish man, entered an apartment building; he saw them enter an apartment. He found out from the concierge that this apartment belonged to hair-stylist Jean-Claude. He waited. The German man left, and then he knocked on the door. A woman appeared; behind her was the other man. To make the story short, the detective threatened the couple with going to the police if they refused to tell him what was going on. Well, Jean-Claude employed her to clean the apartment; his shampoo-girl was her daughter. They, the man was her husband (pimp), used the apartment for escort services. In case J-C went home unexpectedly the girl would ring the phone twice to alarm them. (The happy ending the detective could inform his client that her husband had no mistress.)

Princes Marie Louise had her two children very late in life. There had been speculations floating—behind closed doors, of course—of who was "at fault"; Rudi was 14 years older! Miracle daughter Sophie came and pronto Friedrich: at age 45. This June (2026) Friedrich married Amanda Lange in Madrid. Father Rudi, age 95, was unable to travel from Marbella to attend the wedding: YouTube!!

PHILIPPE JUNOT, ex-husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco, roamed the marina shops. Sales girls complained that he walked out with merchandise: telling them to send the bill to his residence; shop-owners knew what was "in store". Society rumored: ladies whispering—fanning their fans. His success with the female sex was that he was "hung like a donkey".

PLACIDO DOMINGO - THE opera star often stayed at the Marbella Club; side-line: advertising real estate.

SEAN CONNERY and his second wife made headlines entertaining their Hollywood friends at Casa Malibu.

ADNAN KASHOGGI the famous armament dealer; actress Brooke Shields and her mother were frequent guests. His estate La Baraka (the blessing) had 7 villas. When he left for good, the banks owned it all; delinquent in mortgage payments.

Jaime de Mora y Aragon: musician, actor; brother of Queen Fabiola of Belgium. The couple lived in an apartment building—top floor with rooftop garden—across from one of my favorite coffee-shops. Jaime de Mora cut a dashing figure with his showy moustache!

The Duchess of Alba's residence was robbed twice; fed up, she left ... And the jet-set moved to other well-known watering-holes: gay Ibiza and aristocratic Mallorca.

MY MARBELLA YEARS were the best ever learning-experience: meeting and observing the citizens of the world with different cultures widened and enriched my perspective but especially understanding them. It was the "training-ground" for my future as an author.
